What does it take to “make it” in the world today?
Well, depending upon which self-help gurus you follow, there are either 4 or 5 factors that contribute most to your ability to live a happy and successful life:
#1–Good health.
If you are sick, injured, or disabled, this can make you unhappy.
Especially when illness is acute or chronic.
Action step: be proactive in taking care of your health by:
- Exercising.
- Eating right.
- Taking vitamins and supplements.
- Getting an annual checkup.
- Going to the doctor when sickness persists.
- Getting enough sleep.
#2–Wealth.
Money frees you from money worries. People who do not have enough money tend to worry about money all the time. The worry robs them of peace of mind and can greatly diminish happiness and joy.
Action step: be smart about your financial health:
- Strive for a six-figure income.
- Build a seven-figure net worth.
- Be frugal.
- Invest in assets that go up in value.
#3–Relationships.
Humans — even introverts — need and crave contact with other people to be psychologically healthy and happy.
Build the best relationships you can within your family, and also treasure good friends.
#4–Work.
Have and get a career or small business that you enjoy so much you look forward to work instead of it being an unwholesome activity you wish you could escape.
“Keep interested in your career, however humble,” Max Ehrmann advises in his prose poem Desiderata, “it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.”
Some positive thinking writers add a fifth factor:
#5–Spirituality.
For some of us this is optional, but others find a belief in a higher power comforting and beneficial.
Action step: Rate yourself on a scale of 1 to 5 with 1=sorely lacking and 5=have in abundance.
Work to improve so that you rank a 3 or higher in #1 through #4 — where you can — and also #5 if that is important to you.
